My name is Mike Stryer and I'm running for School Board.
Like many of you, I am passionate about education. I worked in the private sector for 15 years, but my six years teaching Social Studies at two local high schools have been the most enjoyable of my career. My hands-on experience with high school seniors has given me a heart-felt desire to see students succeed.
But as a teacher, I have been frustrated by a system that continually falls short in meeting our students' basic educational needs. Our school system needs change from the top down. I am convinced that LAUSD can and must be changed in bold, innovative ways, and that my financial background makes me the right person to dig in and fix this school district's pressing financial problems right now. That is why I am running for School Board.
As a teacher, parent and former finance executive, I am the best-qualified candidate to address the serious problems facing our schools. As your School Board member, I will implement policies to restore fiscal responsibility to LAUSD, reduce class size, attract and retain great teachers, and significantly improve campus safety. I have lived with my wife and two school-aged children on Los Angeles' westside for more than 17 years and have been deeply involved in community activities. I have served as a member of the Palisades Community Council - my area's Neighborhood Council - for the past several years. Additionally, I have been very active in local youth sports organizations, such as American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) and the Pacific Palisades Baseball Association.
For me, this campaign is not about political agendas, it's about providing the best education possible for our kids. I'm the only candidate with the right mix of classroom and business experience, having spent 15 years as a finance executive and six years teaching. I have a passion for education and the skills and motivation to get the job done. I hope you will join me in my campaign to bring real reform to LAUSD.
